Character Information
Name: Jack Harkness
Canon Origin/Series: Doctor Who
School Year: Fifth
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Out of school living location: Port Patrick, Scotland
Blood status: Half-blood
Personality: When attempting to describe Jack Harkness, the first thing people tend to think of is his tendency for his mouth to get him in trouble. Jack can be an over-confident, sarcastic little shit when he wants to be, but he's equally quick with attempting to persuade or charm his way out of any situation. He thinks he knows just what to say and how to say it in order to diffuse tensions or pick up romantical interests. Sometimes he succeeds and sometimes he only digs himself in further.
Jack has a easy sense of humour. He's an extrovert and loves to make people laugh, through both self-depreciation as well as witty comments. He thinks of himself as a people person and is always trying to figure out the best angle to get what he wants. He is very flirty for only being fifteen, and likes to boast about past romances or outrageous incidents. Whether he's making these stories up or whether they are mostly true is up to the audience, but he always makes it something entertaining to listen to at least.
To go along with that aspect, Jack is a strategist and planner. He's intelligent and able to pick up on concepts quickly, then restructure them to plot a course of action. He's got good instincts for trouble, though that doesn't necessarily mean he's great at avoiding it.
There is a streak of anti-authority to his personality that speaks of his past and though he acts friendly and extroverted, Jack is very slow to trust, especially with adults. There are few people who he lets close enough to him to see what he's really thinking and he's constantly wearing a mask. He can have darker moments where he feels to blame for the amount of loss in his life and holds a bitter grudge against his father.
Jack can be very loyal to those he cares about, but is also self-serving when it comes to people he has no feelings for. He's not above putting himself first, but if put in a situation where it's between him or his friends, he will volunteer himself or not divulge secrets. His anti-authority nature tends to lend itself to him being more of a leader with his friends. He recognizes that with leadership comes responsibility and will step up to the plate when required to do so.
He tries not to be a violent person, but he is not afraid to stand up for what he thinks is right and protect those in need. He doesn't shy away from threats, but instead tries to settle things through the most strategic means possible. If that means running away he will do it, but not out of cowardice, more of a necessary retreat and he will more often than not sacrifice himself for those he cares about.
Canon Background: http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Jack_Harkness
Background (AU!Canon; HP):[Sayonara] Jack Harkness was born just outside a small village on the south west coast of Scotland named Port Patrick. His father, Franklin, was a fisherman who spent weeks at a time out to sea with his ship and his mother, Alice, was a homemaker who also happened to be a witch. Alice didn't tell Franklin she was witch, having been a halfblood herself, and only tended to use magic while her husband was away at sea.
Jack didn't show any early magical abilities, until not long after his younger brother Grey was born when he was three. Grey had just learned to walk when he was teetering at the edge of the staircase. Wee Jack saw him start to fall from across the living room and suddenly a gust of wind gently blew Grey the opposite direction, safely away from the stairs, just as Franklin entered the house and saw it all.
From that moment on things were different in the Harkness household. Jack appointed himself Grey's protector and Alice was forced to come out to her husband about what she was. Franklin managed to understand and accept it but grew nervous about what the village would think. They managed to live a few more years in peace, the boys growing up on the coast with great love for the ocean.
Unfortunately it was not to last. Jack caused a minor fire in his primary school at the age of six, which was so unexplainable and caused so much commotion Franklin and Alice felt as though they were forced to move. Franklin managed to land a job on a lake freighter in the United States and the entire family moved to Sandusky, Ohio not long after.
Life in the States was difficult for Jack. He found it harder to protect his brother, as he was constantly being bullied himself. He started to develop social skills, simply out of the need to convince bullies to leave him alone and also dropped his Scottish accent and adopted an American one instead. He covered his insecurities with humour and began to mask how he really felt. As long as he could keep people entertained, they couldn't pick on him. And he genuinely enjoyed making people smile and like him. They still lived on the waterfront, which was a relief, though Lake Erie was much different from the gorgeous Atlanic Ocean.
When Jack was ten years old, tragedy stuck. Jack and Grey had been out swimming by themselves when a group of bullies from school had decided to come over to them. Jack knew that he wouldn't be able to defend himself, nor talk himself out of any trouble and was terrified of something magical happening. Instead, he grabbed Grey by the hand and the two boys started running home. Jack led them into a crowded area, hoping to get lost in the crowd, but tragically lost hold of Grey's hand. He looked for his brother everywhere but it was to no avail. Upon returning home, they phoned the police, but there was no sign of Grey.
Jack was utterly distraught. He blamed himself and was an absolute wreck, no matter what his parents did or said. They took him out of school and tried to keep his spirits up, but nothing helped. At the same time, Alice and Franklin weren't doing well, either. Franklin blamed Alice for not minding the boys more, or not being able to find Grey through the use of magic. For weeks after the loss of Grey, Jack would sit in his room, still greiving for his brother and listening to his parents shout at each other down the hall.
After two months, Franklin went back to work. The day after he left, Alice told Jack to pack his things. With only a suitcase each, Alice pulled Jack close and apparated the both of them back to her Mother's house in Port Patrick, Scotland. She kept Jack out of school the whole rest of the year, and instead with the help of her father, Jack's grandad, she started teaching him magic in preparation for his acceptance into Hogwarts.
Jack poured himself into magic to distract himself from the guilt he felt. Upon being accepted into Hogwarts, he spent his first two years incredibly quiet and secluded himself from everyone. This was mostly because of his guilt he felt over his brother, but also because of the potential bullying he might encounter as he still spoke with an American accent. He would have stayed that way as well, but through the influence of a certain Muggle Studies teacher* in his third year, Jack began to open up.
Jack managed to deal with his guilt and began to go back to his extroverted ways. He started developing a reputation as a trouble-maker out for a good-hearted laugh instead of a serious boy plagued by nightmares. The nightmares still came, but the seriousness had gone. He likes nothing better than a good prank, and has been known to sneak out of the Castle for a midnight swim in the lake. Once he was caught going for a midnight swim completely naked. He continued to receive average marks, though through the shining he took to The Doctor, he began to excell in Muggle Studies.
On the topic of marks, besides Muggle Studies, Jack is adept at Charms. He is interested in History of Magic and enjoys Astronomy. The only class Jack is absolutely rubbish at is Divination, where he can't ever see a damn thing. He also cares nothing about Herbology and cannot wait to drop it at the end of this term. He's fairly average at most other things he puts his mind to... it's really the question of whether he can be arsed to do his homework or not. [Livejournal]
*Permission for use of The Doctor has been privately asked, but not yet granted. This can absolutely be changed in the event of a negative answer from Doctor-mun.
How would your character fit in to each House?
Gryffindor: Jack definitely is brave and stands up for himself and especially those weaker than he. He takes responsibility for his actions and doesn't flinch when speaking his mind, which he does (probably too) often. He is a natural leader.
Hufflepuff: Jack can be loyal to those he cares about and values fairness. Having been brought up with a mostly-muggle childhood, Jack simply doesn't care when it comes to matters of blood purity and tends to sour when others make disparaging remarks about it.
Ravenclaw: Jack is quick on the draw, especially when it comes to analyzing situations. He has a sharp tongue and always has a come-back ready. He enjoys witty banter and really loves learning.
Slytherin: Jack can definitely be resourceful, not only with things but in how he deals with situations. He also has learned that looking out for himself can be important. Jack also has a bit of a selfish desire to earn money and can be bribed into doing tasks through his greed.

The Harkness Guide to Swimming At Hogwarts:
Now, gentle readers, I shall impress upon your young minds the sort of information that really, when it comes down to it, I should be charging you all to read, instead of journalling for free.
The most obvious spot on the grounds is the Lake. It's miles deep and mostly seaweed free on the east side, for those of you who would rather not have to deal with grindylows right off. (Aye, that's right lads and lasses, here there be all sarts'a beasties swimmin' in the loch wi' ya.) Special notes include the Giant Squid, who will mostly keep to himself, though has been known to get a little handsy (tentacly?) when swimming in the buff. (Seriously, you probably don't want to know. Though if interested I can, with the help of a few butterbeers, be persuaded to tell the tale. Inquiries made to J. Harkness [suchandsuch] House) There are also Merpeople, but I've been swimming here for years and have only seen what I think was a merwoman once. They do, most unfortunately, cover their tops.
Other locations include, from what I hear, Prefect Bathrooms. I have yet to manage to break into one to see for myself, but I have it on good authority that they get a whole bloody pool to bathe Themselves in, while the rest of us are reduced to those tiny shower stalls in the House lavatories. (Bloody favouritism, if you ask me.)
I've also heard rumours of another small lake in the Forbidden Forest, but as it's forbidden I, of course, have never been there and never in the future would endeavor to find it, if indeed it exists at all. That said, sources have thought it to be relatively deep, enough so that should an average hypothetical thirteen year old male dive in from a nearby tree branch hanging over it, he would not be in danger of hurting himself.
Finally, in the deepest dungeon, just beyond the Caretaker's office, there resides a sort of in-ground water pit. From everything I've discovered in my research, it used to be part of the extensive punitive system of yore, which makes swimming in it somewhat morbid. However, it exists all the same, and, should one be looking for a place to hide after making a dazzling escape from the aforementioned office, a simple bubblehead charm and you're virtually indectable.
Thus concludes the Harkness Swimming Guide to Hogwarts. (Donations can be forwarded once again to J. Harkness, second bed on the left, [suchandsuch] House.)
Third Person Sample:
It hadn't been very long since the term started but already Jack was feeling the additional stress of the Fifth year. He had heard that classes would be harder and workloads would be more significant in the rush to squeeze the last drop of information out of their textbooks and into their heads before O.W.L.s, but he had taken it in stride. Since he wasn't a member of the Quidditch team, he figured he would have ample down time in the evenings in which to accomplish things, while continuing the extracurriculars he was interested in, like Astronomy Club and shamelessly flirting with the Librarian for attempted access into the restricted section. (Not that it had worked yet, but Jack hoped one day, maybe?)
Instead, he found himself continually stuck with readings and essays and all sorts of boring things seemingly designed to keep him from having any fun. He set his quill down and stretched, leaning back in his chair with a sigh. Looking around the common room, he noticed it seemed much the same for his housemates.
"It's only been three weeks!" He loudly exclaimed to the room at large, his American accent sounding almost out of place as it usually did. "Look at us, all our noses to the grindstone! This is slave labour! I'm off to the kitchens. Who's up for some late-night butterbeer?"
Without waiting for a response from the room at large, Jack was already up and out of his seat, on his way to the door. Already he felt better. An adrenaline pumping excursion through the cooridors was really just what he needed.
